Au distrus locul, big up Noisia!

Mulțimea te-a iubit!

Goldie, Marky, Bailey, Randall, Andy C…

ENGLISH

So tell us a bit about what you are doing at the moment.

Right now I’m sat by a swimming pool in Romania, in the beautiful city of Cluj. I got here last Wednesday and now it’s Tuesday and I played quite a few sets at Electric Castle, it’s my first time here. On Wednesday I played with Dimension at the Booha stage, which was absolutely fantastic, the energy levels on day 0 were out of this world. On Saturday I played with Etherwood at the Hangar stage, which is a much bigger stage than Booha, that was crazy. Then on Sunday I played with Patife at the Booha stage again, he did a 3 hour set and played everything from drum and bass to brazilian music; Patife has got such a way of flowing through different generes and styles and perfect summer music. Then in the evening I played with my boy S.P.Y, my main DJ, and we had to come on after Noisia who were performing ‘Outer Edges’. They destroyed the place, big up Noisia! And then we came on and we did our thing and that was a beautiful experience, S.P.Y is one of those DJs who can go from liquid to tek to a little bit of jump-up in the set, it’s a full, confident set, but all quality music. And then, I thought I was finished, but some people behind the stage, including the person who’s interviewing me, brought me into playing with MadLiquid. Actually, I’ve forgotten a set, I played with DWLS as well on Saturday after Etherwood. So in 3 days I think I MC’d for about 9 hours at Electric Castle this year and I’ve just been invited to do an after party tonight so we’re gonna do that as well.

Out of all of those, which one is your favourite and why?

The favourite has to be working with S.P.Y because he’s my main DJ, we’re very good friends, we travel the world together and so it’s very easy for me to work with him, it’s just what we do.

I know he was feeling poorly that night…

He was sick, very sick.

Do you feel that his performance was rather different to what he normally does?

Not really, no, because S.P.Y is a machine, he produces so much music, it’s unbelievable. Most of the music that he produces never gets released because he actually produces too much to release it all. But he was sick, very sick for a couple of weeks. Last weekend we played in Seoul, in South Korea and he was sick there. We went all the way to South Korea and we played in the olympic stadium there in front of 20.000 people and then we did an afterparty, we played for another two hours. He was way too sick to play there but he did it. The night before he came to Romania he was in hospital getting checked out, still being sick 2 weeks later. He still got on the plane and came over even though I said he should stay at home because he is my friend and he’s sick so I will look after him. But he’s a professional and he’s like “No, I am not going to let those people down and I’m gonna come even though I’m feeling sick”. But did it change his set? Not really, because he’s a machine: he felt bad but he still does what he does. The energy from the crowd was really nice, that gives you a good feeling. Hopefully, he gets better soon.

I hope so too. So now you get to play all over the world, in Korea, in Romania and so on and so forth. How would you describe your experience so far? How did you get here? Was it a bumpy ride?

I’ve been an MC for drum & bass music for over 20 years now, so yes, it’s been a bumpy ride to get here, lots of highs and lows, but I feel very lucky, I fell in love with hardcore and jungle many years ago, back in the 90’s. It was a passion and in a minute it became a job. I’m so lucky to be able to travel and meet different people. I have never heard of Electric Castle, this specific festival, and got offered to come out here and I was like ‘Wow, I’ve never been to Cluj, so, yeah, let’s do it!’. I didn’t know what to expect but it’s been absolutely fantastic from the moment we met at the airport. They have ‘angels’ who look after the artists. I arrived early because I wanted to check out Cluj…I luckily met Dimension on the plane and his angel was like ‘Ok, you can come with us’, so even though I wasn’t supposed to be here yet, they still looked after us and they drove us to our apartment and then everybody from that point on has been really cool. The sound engineers have been very good: asked for recorders, they were like “Here are the recorders”, “Here is your microphone”, “Do this”, “Do that”. Everything has been on point, the food here is lovely, the soundsystem is a killer ‘cause there’s no restriction so you know…but it’s not just loud, it’s quality. The visuals have been good and the crowd has been awsome so yeah, overall it’s been a fantastic experience!

The crowd absolutely loved you!

Thank you!

Looking back to your past in drum and bass and jungle and so on, can you recall a specific event that really got you into it, made you decide you want to do this for the rest of your life?

The life changing event for me was in 1991. Up to that point I’d be listening to hip-hop music, reggae music, my mom’s collection, she had a very good collection, my dad was a bit more into The Rolling Stones and The Clash so I had a very good education in music from them too. Then I found hip-hop and started to hear some rave music but I was more on the hip-hop side of things at that point. Then I went to a rave in England by Spiral Tribe, an underground party collective, and I went along to that and that totally changed my life. I wasn’t performing there, I was a kid, I was 13 or something, but…

Haha, how’d you get in?

It was an illegal rave, it was placed in a picnic area in the south of England and yeah, I got there. We’d already started a crew, me and my friends, we started a hip-hop crew before that. Even though we didn’t have any records, we were a hip-hop crew. And then I went to this festival, this rave, and I came home and I said “Alright, guys, we’re changing, we’re not hip-hop anymore, we’re hardcore” and they were like “What?” and I was like “No, trust me”. So then we started to play by records, early Prodigy, early R & S records, stuff like that. We got into this hardcore music and then we did our first gig probably 2 months after that. We were booked to play for one hour at the party at 8 ‘till 9 pm, but we turned up with this hardcore music and destroyed the party, everyone was like “What?”. The older guys were playing hits, you know, Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue and stuff like that and they saw what we did and they said we’re not playing. You have to keep playing and we were like “Ok. We only have 30 records or something” so we had to play everything twice or three times, with loads of rewinds, but we stopped playing at 2 am, we were the only DJ’s who played at that party and from then on I was an MC I suppose.

So from hardcore to then jungle to then drum and bass, I mean this kind of music had so many transformations. What do you think about the way it evolved, the way it is nowadays?

For me, it went: hardcore, hardcore techno, jungle techno, jungle and then drum and bass, that’s the flow that I saw and I witnessed. Now I see the hardcore sound comes from house and techno. So for me the key periods have been hardcore, ‘cause I fell in love with electronic music, then it was jungle, ‘cause that was just phenomenal, and then after that, now it’s more often to drum & bass. Drum and bass is different, it’s a lot more technical now, jungle was a lot rawer because people didn’t really understand the equipment and now people have been doing it for 20 years, people have gotten clever and they really understand music. So drum and bass now is one of the most technical musics in the world, if you can produce good drum & bass music, you can go and make dubstep or house, you roughly already know what you’re doing because drum and bass is so technical, which is an amazing thing. For me, I’ve just enjoyed it, there are different aspects of the music, there’s really comercial stuff, which isn’t really my thing, but it helps getting into the charts and that helps other people learn about it and then they find the more underground stuff. I’m definetly on the underground side of the sea, but I’m lucky enough that the underground now is pretty big so we can still play really incredible music to big audiences all over the world and everyone has fun, so, yeah, it has developped well.

Out of all the DJ’s / producers there are, is there anyone in particular who you haven’t ever MC’d for and you would love to do it?

That’s a really good question. No, in my field, in jungle and drum and bass, I’ve played with pretty much everyone one time or another. Some people I played with more often than others for whatever reason but no, there’s not really anyone.

So S.P.Y is definetly your favourite?

He’s one of my favourites.

Alright, who are the others?

Goldie, Marky, Bailey, Randall, Andy C…

But out of all the newcomers, who do you think we should keep an eye on?

Define “new”. How “new” are we talking?

I don’t know, last two years or something?

Philth. He’s a guy from England, from London and he’s a very, very good producer in my opinion, very, very good DJ, he’s also a really nice guy and he’s basically the complete package. I am very confident that over the next 5 years he’s gonna blow. He’s already getting there, but I think he’s gonna go quite a long way.

Now, going a bit off topic, would you ever consider doing any non-drum’n’bass projects?

I already have done something for some weird guys in Italy, I can’t remember their name but it was quite fun, they were live musicians, basic drummers with found objects like rubbish bins and pots and pans, they did this smashing sound. I wish I could remember their name, it’s really rude I forgot their name. That was quite interesting. I’ve done dupstep, I’ve done a live band with The Upbeats, which is really good, but that’s drum and bass I suppose. So, yeah, I’ve dabbled with other stuff.

Let’s get into a bit of a trivia kind of stuff. What is the best club for you?

Probably the one I’m playing next weekend.

Which is what?

That’s the same one every weekend, haha. Any club that’s full, with a good soundsystem, that’s full of people who love drum and bass, that’s the best club. There are lots of big clubs around the world, I mean Fabric is obviously well classed, I’ve been lucky to play there for many years, the one we played in Seoul, in Korea, it’s called “Rabbit Hole”, less than 100 people. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, nice soundsystem, really good vibe. There are lots of good clubs, I haven’t got one favourite club.

Favourite festival?

Sun & Bass. It’s the home of deeper drum and bass, it’s not about money, it’s about vibe and music, it’s very small, it’s in beautiful surrondings, it has great food. I’ve been lucky enough to play there every year for like 11-12 years now and it’s the best day in the calendar.

That’s cool! For romanians travelling to the UK, outside of London, where would you recommend them to go for drum and bass?

Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, they all have very strong scenes, but most cities have drum and bass going on. In Brighton it’s also very good, Leeds has good nights, Liverpool…but the 4 key cities in my oppinion are Bristol, London, Manchester and Birmigham.

Another totally random question: if you were to describe the romanian crowd in 3 words, what would those be?

Loud, rowdy, beautiful.

Aww, that’s cool. Thank you! I think we’re done.
