 “Giz a cig”

DUB PHIZIX INTERVIEW

Dub Phizix will play at Sabotage Festival in Timisoara this weekend so I thought I’d try to piss him off with some annoying questions. Not sure whether I accomplished that, but I definitely had a good laugh when I read his answers!

  1. Do you have any musical guilty pleasures?

Loads

2. Do you prefer smaller or massive gigs?

I like playing smaller shows as I can play different tunes and usually play deeper.

But at the smaller shows you can see every face in the club which can be good to see if people are into the music but some people take too much drugs and end up looking like a shoe so I don’t want to see that. It’s harder to see those people at bigger shows so that’s good and it’s nice to be able to take pictures of massive crowds so I can show me mum.

3. What’s better: DJing or production?

I always considered myself a producer first and foremost but nowadays I play so many shows that I’m more of a DJ. It’s harder to find the time to make music when DJ all the time.

It’s a different kind of buzz after making a tune I’m really proud of than it is to playing a good show but both are a wicked feeling and both better than any of the drugs.

4. As a kid you used to play the guitar. Is it important to have a musical background to make electronic music?

Not necessarily but it can help. I’m shite on the keyboard so it meant my music isn’t the most musical haha.

I just bought myself a nice Telecaster tho and I’ve got it set up so I can play any sound I want off the guitar so I’m making bass sounds and playing them in off the guitar. It’s mental.

It’s the first really nice guitar I’ve ever had though so I’m enjoying it.

5. What artist (producer, vocalist) would you love to collaborate with (but it will never happen because they’re too big or too snobbish or whatever reason)?

Burt Bacharach

6. Besides dancehall and hip hop, what other music genres inspire you?

I’m into all kinds of stuff like soul, jazz, funk, grime but I prefer shit from the 60s and 70s more than music from nowadays.

7. What’s the oddest thing that ever happened to you while touring?

Brexit. Fuckin mental all that. It’s going to make touring in Europe a pain in the arse in the future.

8. You did FabricLive 84, and then gave away loads of free tunes (which was pretty amazing!). How do you feel about Fabric’s closure?

Absolutely gutted. I feel like I’ve lost a limb. Myself and countless other artists owe so much of their careers to Fabric.

The whole closure had been planned by the police and the council for years and was some of the most corrupt shit I’ve ever seen. Hopefully that can be proved and we can get Fabric back because at the moment this is a fucking tragedy for music and culture in the UK.

9. Since the big news, is there a big ‘coming together’ in the Manchester drum and bass scene to help save one of the most iconic venues of the UK?

Manchester is different to London in that there was a big problem with gangs running the doors of clubs in the late 80s and early 90s so the clubs and the police had no choice but to work together to stop it and that has carried on til today. Fabric tried to do that in London but unfortunately the Police weren’t interested in making something work, they just made life difficult for Fabric because they wanted rid of them.

10. You are performing at SABOTAGE Festival in Timisoara this weekend and it is not your first time in Romania. How would you describe the music scene here?

I always enjoy playing in Romania. It reminds me of Manchester in some ways. The crowds are always really energetic.

11. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans in Romania?

Giz a cig

RESTECPA Dub Phizix for taking the time to answer my questions. Romanian crew, watch out, he’s gonna mash up the place @ Sabotage Festival!
